Q.           What is an Educational Supervisor?

A.            An educational supervisor is a trainer who is selected and appropriately trained to be responsible for the overall supervision and management of a specified trainee’s educational progress during a training placement or series of placements.

Q.           What is a Clinical Supervisor?

A.            A clinical supervisor is a trainer who is selected and appropriately trained to be responsible for overseeing a specified trainee’s clinical work and providing constructive feedback during a training placement.

The SWPD adds to this ‘a trainee can only have one Clinical Supervisor at one point in time, this is the individual responsible for writing a formal report of the trainees progress. Many other clinicians will supervise clinical work.’

Q.           How do I become an Educational or Clinical Supervisor?

A.            You should express an interest to your local postgraduate medical education team. You can commence the training process before taking on the role.

Q.           Why do I need to train?

A.            To undertake the role effectively you will require insight to the postgraduate medical education process and discussion around possible scenarios you might encounter. The GMC (as regulator) states that all Educational and Clinical Supervisors must be trained for their role.

Q.           What training is required to be a Clinical Supervisor in the SWPD?

A.            You are required to attend courses relating to:

  •  Training and Patient Safety (Course 1) - (Courses 1 & 2 run together in 1/2 day)
  • Successful Learning Environments (Course 2)
  • Workplace Based Assessments & Feedback (Course 3 - 1/2 day))

Q.           What training is required to be an Educational Supervisor in the SWPD?

A.            You are required to complete the courses necessary for Clinical Supervision (see previous question), in addition you need to attend courses relating to:

  •  Doctors in Difficulty & Career Planning (Course 4 - 1/2 day)
  • ARCPs and Objective Setting (Course 5 - 1/2 day)

Q.           How much time does the training take?

A.            Over a 3 year period you will be expected to undertake:

  • Clinical Supervisor training - 1 day
  • Educational Supervisor training - 2 days

Q.           When am I required to start training?

A.            Those commencing as a supervisor after Jan 2011 are required to enrol on a training programme within 3 months of being appointed to the role. Those who were supervisors before this date are required to complete all required training within 3 years i.e by Dec 2013.

Q.           How do I undertake the required training?

A.            The courses are advertised on the Deanery website, application is electronic.

Q.           Where does the training take place?

A.            Courses are run in locations across the Peninsula Deanery. Click here for course dates/ venues.

Q.           Is there a course fee?

A.            No. The courses are only available to trainers within the SWPD.

Q.           Are the courses CPD approved?

A.            Yes, 3 CPD points for each course. A certificate of course completion will be issued.

Q.           Are courses undertaken elsewhere accepted as being accredited for training?

Q.           I have an educational role with PCMD is there training recognised?

A.            At present no. We are working closely with PCMD and anticipate some reciprocal recognition of generic training in the near future.

Q.           Once trained will I need to repeat training?

A.            You will not be required to repeat the essential training. However, you will be required to demonstrate continued engagement in, and updating of, your role as a Trainer

Q.           Should the role of Educational Supervisor be recognised in my job plan?

A.            National guidance indicates 0.25 SPA for each trainee you are educational supervising. Implementation of this by Trusts is being monitored by the SWPD.

Q.           Should the role of Clinical Supervisor be recognised in my job plan?

A.            The specialty department should acknowledge this activity in your job planning, however it does not carry SPA time attached to it. A training post without a Clinical Supervisor attached to it is at risk of losing its educational recognition.
