Courses for Clinical and Educational Supervisors

Please note that there have been changes to the course descriptors following comments and feedback.

They are noted as 2012 updates.

The SWPD has agreed that training for supervisors is essential and that varying elements are mandatory for supervisors be they Clinical or Educational.

The courses run must fulfil the following:

1. Content must be relevant to the role and comply with the standards required by the regulator.

2.  The training must be delivered in a fashion which is time efficient. It has been estimated that this would require the equivalent of 2 days (2012 update - now 1 day) training for Clinical Supervisors and 4 days (2012 update - now 2 days) for Educational Supervisors over a 3 year period. Courses will be in both an e-learning and face to face format.

3. Each course should have two components, firstly a knowledge base and secondly practical scenarios relevant to the work place.
The knowledge base will be delivered in an e-learning component. Its content will be developed by the Deanery and be available to supervisors in a format that will be easily accessible.
The practical component will be delivered face to face in a small group facilitated environment. Participants will be expected to bring examples of prior experiences or perceived potential concerns to these sessions. The examples will be relevant to the course objectives.

4. The knowledge component (e-learning) will need to be undertaken before participation in the face to face course.

5. Courses will be run in locations as near to participants as is practical.

Outline of Programme

The programme will be composed of 5 courses, courses 1-3 are mandatory for all supervisors (clinical and educational). Courses 4-5 are mandatory for educational supervisors and optional for clinical supervisors.

All supervisors will be required to have completed the mandatory element of the courses over a 3 year period. Alternative evidence for completion of the core standards will be accepted (for example attendance at courses run by other providers)

The time commitment for the mandatory elements, including the e-learning component will not exceed the duration stated above.

A brief description of each course is described below:

Numbers, Places and Timelines

Numbers

The programme of training will be applicable to those supervisors of Foundation and Specialty (excluding GP) trainees. Currently the Deanery hosts approximately 1,100 posts. Many supervisors, clinical and educational, have responsibilities for more than 1 trainee. A number supervise specialty and foundation trainees. An estimate of the number of individual supervisors is as follows: Clinical Supervisors = 500, Educational Supervisors = 250. The vast majority of educational supervisors will also have a clinical supervisor role.

The optimum number of individuals on a course would be 20.

With these figures the calculation for the number of courses that will need to run over a 3 year cycle is as follows:

Courses 1-3 (mandatory for clinical and educational supervisors).

Capacity required over 3 years 500 places.
Each course 20 participants
Number of each course to run over 3 years 500/20 = 25
Total number of courses over 3 years 25x3 = 75

Total days of course delivery over 3 years (Course 1&2 ½ day, course 3 full day)
(50x0.5) + (25x1) = 50.

Courses 4-5 (mandatory for educational supervisors).

Capacity required over 3 years 250 places.
Each course 20 participants
Number of each course to run over 3 years 250/20 = 12.5
Total number of courses over 3 years 12.5x2 = 25

Total days of course delivery over 3 years = 25

Total number of courses each year (75/3) + (25/3) = 33

Total days of course delivery each year (50/3) + (25/3) = 25

Where

It is important to provide the courses with as equal access as possible. Most of our supervisors are employed in the 5 acute trusts. Any supervisor can enrol on any course, they don’t need to restrict themselves to their own place of work. A suggested distribution for course provision is given below:

This distribution of courses will allow maximum ability for individuals to attend the complete course with minimal travel. Courses 1&2 will often be run as a full day within a Trust but with the option of individuals attending a full or ½ day with the ability to attend the other half on a different occasion.

Timelines

The programme will commence in Autumn 2010. It is anticipated that Courses 1,2 & 3 will have an e-learning component in place by the start date, however the e-learning component to courses 4 & 5 will be developed at a later date. It is important however that there is no delay in running courses 4 & 5 consequently they will in the beginning have just the face to face element to them. A detailed programme of proposed dates will be developed and published in the near future.
