After the success of the inaugural Peninsula Welcome Event organised for trainees who commenced Foundation in August 2011, the Peninsula Foundation School organised a second event to help students matched to the School for August 2012 make their individual job preferences in stage 2 of the application process. The Welcome Event was held on Friday 6th January 2012 at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth and a team from each trust attended including Foundation Programme Directors, Foundation Programme Managers and current Foundation trainees.  The report compiled from the feedback received can be accessed below.

The Peninsula Foundation School organised its first Welcome Event to help students matched to the School for August 2011 make their individual job preferences in stage 2 of the application process. The Peninsula Deanery hosted the 3rd GP development day in July 2010 for F2 supervisors in General Practice.  The sessions were delivered by Georgia Jones, Head of Peninsula Foundation School and Vik Mohan, Associate GP Dean.  The aims of the event were to enable GP supervisors to share experiences, build on their knowledge and skills as educationalists and receive feedback and an update from the Foundation School.  A report was compiled following feedback received after the event and this can be accessed via the link below along with notes from the topics discussed during the day.

When trainees are matched to Peninsula Foundation School they are aware of their full programme details for F1 and the trust location of their F2 year.  The Peninsula Foundation School undertook an exercise in 2009 to consider adopting two year fixed Foundation programmes.  The following report details the considerations and outcome of this piece of work.

Compared with the previous two years, a higher proportion of PMS students have chosen to complete the foundation programme outside the Peninsula. The Peninsula Foundation School is keen to understand the reasons behind local students’ choices of schools and to examine whether there are actions that can be taken to encourage locally trained doctors to remain in the region for their postgraduate training.  The following report details the findings from a questionnaire circulated to 5th year PMS students.

Following the Specialty Recruitment round in 2008, the Peninsula Foundation School became aware of a general perception held by Foundation Year 2 doctors that, if they were to be appointed to a CT1 post in General Surgery, they needed to have undertaken an F2 post in Surgery, preferably as the first post in the year. A study was carried out to investigate the validity of this perception by reviewing shortlisted applications.  A copy of the report completed following the study is available below.

All five Trusts in the Peninsula were contacted in May 2008 and asked to provide pay bandings for all F1 and F2 posts for 2008/09.  This information was collated by the Deanery between May and August 2008 and any readers of this report should be aware that bandings may change for 2009/10 with the introduction of the 48 hour Working Time Directive limit.

June 2007

On 21st February 2007, the Peninsula Deanery Foundation Directorate delivered a presentation to help inform 4th Year PMS students about the Foundation programme. Students were asked to complete a consultation to inform the Deanery about their current preferences for the Foundation Programme. The purpose of the survey was to help plan for the progression of the second cohort of PMS students. A report based on the questionnaires received can be accessed below.

The Deanery and Trust Foundation Programme Directors consider it important to take into account the preferences of trainees in the provision of its Foundation Programmes. To prepare for the progression from F1 to F2 and inform planning of 2-year programmes, a questionnaire was designed by the Foundation Directorate and distributed to all F1 trainees. October 2005

The South West Peninsula Postgraduate Deanery, in conjunction with the Peninsula Medical School, hosted a General Practice Conference in October 2005 at the John Bull Building in Plymouth. The conference was designed to:

  • provide GPs with a greater awareness of the current, local developments in medical education as delivered in general practice;
  • help GPs decide if they would like to start, continue or extend engagement in medical education and to
  • inform the PMS, the Deanery and the SHA about the needs of general practice in relation to expanding the delivery of medical education.

September 2005

During July/August 2005 there was significant national press coverage concerning the apparently large number of doctors unable to secure Senior House Officer (SHO) posts following their PRHO year.
