AssessmentAnnual Assessment

Welcome to the assessment pages for the School of Medicine. Annual assessments fall under 2 types - Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) and Record of In Training Assessment (RITA).  Explanations of these assessments can be found below.  Trainees undertaking Academic Training, in Locum Appointment for Training (LAT) posts and those on Out Of Programme must have an annual assessment. Failure to undertake an annual assessment can result in the training time not counting towards the trainees CCT / CESR.

Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)

In August 2007 a new postgraduate specialty training structure was introduced. Any doctor (Specialist Trainee (ST), Core Trainee (CT), Academic Trainee) appointed in or after August 2007 is now governed by the "Gold Guide June 2010" and associated Curriculums; this is also applicable to Locum Appointment for Training (LAT) posts and Fixed Term Specialty Training Appointments (FTSTA) posts. There is a variation for trainees who are appointed to Core Training where their training is governed by the 'Gold Guide June 2010' and the 'Core Training Supplement'. All these documents can be found on the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC)website where you can also find information relating to the training process. All trainees appointed in or after August 2007 will undertake an Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP). This is a compulsory element of your training and is an assessment of the documented and submitted evidence that is presented by the trainee.  Failure to produce this evidence for the panel can result in an Unsatisfactory Outcome and hinder your progress within the specialty and extend your anticipated Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date.

Record of In-Training Assessment (RITA)

Any doctor (Specialist Registrars (SpR), Academic Trainee) appointed prior to August 2007 may continue to train using the curriculum to which they were appointed. This curriculum is governed by the 'Orange Book' (A Guide to Specialist Registrar Training). Trainees who still follow this type of curriculum will be assessed under the Record of In-Training Assessment (RITA) process. This is a compulsory element of your training and provides a record of the annual review and therefore of the Specialist Registrars (SpR) progress through the training programme and the grade.

 Academic Trainees

All trainees undertaking academic training must have an annual review. The annual review will assess the trainees progression within their academic field but also assess clinical competence - both must be achieved to acquire a satisfactory outcome at their ARCP (appointed after 2007) or RITA (appointed prior to 2007).

ARCP Trainees

Trainees are required to undertake the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) and must complete the following documentation and submit this by the published date on the timetable page:

Out Of Programme (OOP) Assessments

All trainees undertaking Out Of Programme training must undertake an annual assessment. Information relating to Out Of Programme and the procedure in applying for this can be found on the Out Of Programme Policy pages of the Peninsula Deanery website.

ARCP Trainees

Whatever the type of Out Of Programme the trainee has taken, all trainees are required to submit the following documents on an annual basis by the published date on the timetable page.

  • Please list any publications, presentations or any other academic achievements obtained while on Out Of Programme training

Where appropriate trainees are also required to complete the relevant clinical paperwork.

  • Please list any publications, presentations or any other academic achievements obtained while on Out Of Programme training

Reviews and Appeals

In the event of an adverse outcome trainees have the right to ask for a review and / or an appeal. This is covered in the relevant sections of the appropriate guidelines issued by PMETB:

ARCP - 'The Gold Guide' (A Reference for Postgraduate Specialty Training in the UK)

RITA - 'The Orange Book' (A Guide to Specialist Registrar Training)

This is also covered in more detail on the Reviews and Appeal pages on the Peninsula Deanery website.
